Safe Zone Training

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte has revised its Safe Zone Program in February 2008 with the new Assistant Director for Sexual/Gender Diversity in the Multicultural Resource Center. We now offer the following trainings:

Safe Zone Part I: LGBTQ 101
This half-day session focuses on basic information about the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning/Queer population. This training starts off with definitions and grows to discuss topics such as homophobia, heterocentrism, and heterosexism. This training is required to become a Safe Zone Ally and is a pre-requisite for Part II-IV.

Safe Zone Part II-IV: Ally Development
These three sessions are a total of about a half-day of training and build on the information discussed in Safe Zone Part I: LGBTQ 101. These sessions focus on distributing information about resources on campus, in the community, and nationally. In addition these sessions discuss common issues facing LGBTQ college students and how to become an ally and refer students. This training cannot be mandated by a department and is completly optional for all faculty/staff.

Requirements:

  • Currently, a UNC-Charlotte faculty or staff person with an office or classroom on campus.
  • Attend two 1/2 day training sessions.

Safe Zone Ally Brown Bag Lunch Series
Safe Zone will be offering a continuing development opportunity to all Allies. This Brown Bag series will allow Allies to meet and discuss topics regarding the LGBTQ college community. These are completely free and open to all Allies within the program. There will be two a month; one focusing on gender identity, and one focusing on sexual orientation.

Please note that if you were a Safe Zone Ally prior to February 1, 2008 at UNC-Charlotte or another institution, you still must go through this brand new training.
